Cristina Varga -
Theatre Maker
I’m Cristina Varga, and right now I’m sitting in a café, attempting to put into words what it is that I actually am. My interests are wide-ranging (and constantly expanding), so this little “About me” is my best attempt at capturing a moving target.
So, here we go:
I am a Romanian theatre maker, performer, comedian, currently working in radio and I’m based in Plymouth, UK.
I began my journey in Timișoara, Romania, studying acting at the Faculty of Music and Theatre, West University of Timișoara. Soon after graduation, I joined the independent theatre company Auăleu, where I worked for three years.
In 2019 I moved to the UK to pursue a master’s degree in Performance Training at the University of Plymouth. During this time, I began experimenting with interdisciplinary art that blends physical theatre and new media art often featuring nature as a visual element.
Right after graduating, I moved to Barcelona, Spain, to teach drama at SEK International School.
In Barcelona, I started going to comedy open mic nights and was immediately drawn in. Since moving to the UK, I’ve kept that love alive — co-hosting a comedy night with Oli Cordova at The Underground in Plymouth and performing across Devon, Cornwall, and Bristol
In 2022 I came back to the UK (as you cannot stay away from Plymouth for too long!) and started working on my first one-woman show Close Enough. The show started as a 15-min piece that I performed at the Ideas Lab at Theatre Royal Plymouth and by 2023 it became a one hour show, which I performed again at The Lab at TRP.
In 2024, I co-founded Everything but Theatre with Danni Compton and took Close Enough at Camden Fringe and Barnstaple TheatreFest.
In 2024 I was also one of the performers at the 24 Hour Plays at Theatre Royal Plymouth.
In 2024 I also had my first performative installation, SCALES, in my hometown Timisoara, which has been realised through the Energie! Creation Grants, awarded by the Municipality of Timișoara through the Project Center.
In 2024 (busy year!) I have also started my new job as a Production Apprentice at BBC Radio Devon. What does this mean? It means that I learned how to do a little bit of everything: producing, interviewing, recording, filming, editing, social media and a really, really good cup of tea. As part of this Apprenticeship I am also taking the Level 3 Production Assistant course with Bauer Academy.
In 2025, my theatre company Everything but Theatre has been funded by the Arts Council England to take Close Enough on a Spring tour in the South-West. We toured at Theatre Royal Plymouth (The Drum this time!), Exeter Phoenix, intoBodmin, Sterts Arts and Environmental Centre – Liskeard, The Poly – Falmouth and The Tobacco Factory – Bristol.
I think that’s it for now! On this website you’ll find pages on each project, with more info and links.
